1954,
local volunteers organized the Columbus and
Lowndes County Community Chest with a mission to
"assist and strengthen the civic, health, and welfare,
charitable and philanthropic organizations of Columbus
and its vicinity in Lowndes County, to promote co-operation,
efficiency and economy in their operation, to develop
and foster community responsibility for their support,
and to engage in such activities to the end that these
objects may be accomplished."
Their
goal and vision was to free up the agencies to carry
out their missions of serving people rather than having
to spend time going door to door or letter writing to
raise funds. That year, five organizations were assisted
with their fundraising efforts through the work of those
volunteers and the generous contributions of our community.
Through
the years, faces changed. Needs changed. And in
1975, our name changed. United Way of Lowndes County
became incorporated.
